How to get the best value from your wedding flowers

I am very aware that most couples have a budget for their flowers, I certainly did. Whether your budget is large or small I will endeavour to make your flowers work as hard as possible for you. Here are a few things that I always encourage my couples to think about doing to get the best value from their flowers.

Move your flowers during the day

Arrangements can often be moved to a second, or even third, location during the day. For example it’s very popular now for ceremony table flowers to be moved onto your top table for your wedding breakfast. Repurposing flowers works best for arrangements that are in water as these are more tolerant of being moved around and less impacted by the temperature on your wedding day, think vases, milk churns and meadow boxes. Any plans to move your arrangements will need to be agreed with the team at your wedding venue in advance, but most will be very happy to do this for you. It’s even possible to move larger statement pieces like arches. This is likely to incur an additional labour cost, but as one of the most expensive arrangements that you might have, why wouldn’t you want to move it from your ceremony to your reception?

Decide what is most important to you

Maybe there are already flowers provided at the church, so you don’t want to spend your money there, or you want to focus on group shots of you with your bridesmaids and groomsmen, so you want to make sure they have stunning bouquets and pocket flowers. I think it’s really important to consider this in conjunction with the brief you are giving to your photographer. For example, if you’ve asked them to take lots of photos of your wedding speeches, then I would recommend making sure that your top table looks really beautiful, perhaps with a long and low arrangement and lots of bud vases and candles.

Gift them

If your flowers have been in water, then they will hopefully last for a few more days after your wedding, so why not gift them to your guests at the end of your day. It’s a lovely way to say thank you to anybody that has helped out with your wedding, or been an important part of your life. Planted table centres of herbs or lavender, or even vase arrangements if you would like to cover the cost of the vases, will mean that your special guests go home with a lovely reminder of your day.

Feel good about them

I work with Confetti Club London, who repurpose used flowers to make biodegradable petal confetti, which is then sold for charity. With prior arrangement I can make sure that any unwanted flowers are sent away to them and put to good use, and how lovely that they get to be enjoyed at a second wedding!

Preserve them

It’s becoming increasingly popular for couples to have bouquets and buttonholes preserved. Options for preserving your flowers include having them pressed and made into artworks, preserving them in resin, and drying them. You will need to pre-book most of these options as the flowers will need to be collected or sent away swiftly after your wedding, and I would recommend booking as early as possible as these services are getting much busier.
